Hi! My name is Matt and I'm a structural engineer and master's student in New York City. In 2022, I began taking photos as a way to timestamp memories with friends in New York. Some photos came out good, which made me happy and fueled by budding interest in photography. Many photos however, came out very bad and I still don't know what I was thinking when I hit the shutter button. Such is life. Over time, I've explored both digital and film photography and have narrowed what I liked from each practice. From film, the joy of receiving the developed scans from the lab, only to find 5 photos (from a roll of 36) properly exposed and in focus. From digital, the instant response and lower cost of error (I once shot two rolls back to back in Ericera, Portugal, where I incorrectly loaded the film and took 36 pictures on the same slide). I still shoot both, however currently find myself shooting mostly digital within the Fujifilm ecosystem.
Many of the photos I take are centered around the human use of public space and our peaceful existence in nature. Living in New York, the chaos can be all encompassing, and a moment of serenity has often felt like something worth capturing. Additionally, the engineer in me forces my hand in photographing interesting infrastructure and buildings/houses (I have no say in this, believe me). Building this site has been a fun way to learn about web design and how collections of photos can be grouped to make seemingly dull memories more vibrant. I hope you enjoy the photos I've shared!
